Hurricane Paula 2010 Forms, Heads Toward Mexico

CANCUN, Mexico - A strengthening Hurricane Paul was addressing station points on the Yucatan peninsula Tuesday.

The hurricane destroyed homes and forced schools to cancel classes Tuesday morning in Honduras, then became a Category 2 storm with sustained winds of 100 mph (160 kph) on the way to the Yucatan Peninsula , the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami.

North-northwest near 10 mph (17 kph), Paula center passed just east of Cancun, on the morning of Wednesday, and could near Category 3 by then, as the hurricane center.

He warned that preparations to protect life and property must be brought to completion.

Dozens of boat owners in Cancun transported yachts and other boats of the coast, while tour operators in the sea of cancellation of bookings. At least one Caribbean Ferries company, canceled trips by ferry from Playa del Carmen on the resort island of Cozumel, south of Cancun, while others continue to operate while the weather is still mild.




Armando closed Galmiche Concert skiing in Cancun and had 15 reservations canceled Tuesday afternoon.

"It is high season for tourism and with this storm, things will get worse," he said, lamenting the loss of income.

Early Tuesday, heavy rains and strong winds destroyed 19 homes in northern Honduras, said Lisandro Rosales, director of emergency management agency of Honduras. Authorities have closed schools along the Atlantic coast and in some airports were reported closed.

Tuesday afternoon, the hurricane was centered about 140 miles (220 kilometers) south-southeast of Cozumel.

Paula is expected to dump 3 to 6 inches (8-15 centimeters) of Honduras, northern Belize, the eastern part of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico and parts of western and central Cuba.

The government of Mexico issued a hurricane warning for the country's Caribbean coast from Punta Gruesa north of Cabo Catoche, including the island of Cozumel. Warnings are issued when hurricane conditions are almost certain to occur.

Forecasters warned against possible floods and landslides and suggested that residents avoid fishing trips and water sports.

Forecasters, the storm produced heavy rains could cause flash floods and landslides, especially in the mountains of Nicaragua and Honduras. Said isolated mountain areas in Honduras could reach 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain.

Coastal flooding heavy swell which was also planned along the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.
