According to the international junior partner Pastry, sweet day began with a man, Herbert Birch Kingston, who had the idea of showing love for widows, orphans and the poor in the shower with gifts of candy. Herbert Birch Kingston was an employee of a candy company in a short period of time, about a dozen of Cleveland, Ohio, the largest manufacturer of candy left at the first Sweetest Day saw more than 20,000 boxes of candy given to vendors for free newspapers, orphans, the elderly and poor.
